Sḵwx̱wú7mesh First Nation community-based experiential learning session

Date:
May 22, 2024 - 5:00pm to 9:00pm

The Joint Collaborative Committees (JCCs), in partnership with Len Pierre Consulting and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh First Nation will be hosting a cultural experiential learning session for physicians on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

Space is limited to 50 participants.

During these sessions, physicians will experience:

  • Cultural safety teachings through interactive, “circle and the box” learning.
  • Teachings and protocol from the local/regional Indigenous communities.
  • Traditional foods, songs, protocols, language, history, and stories.
  • A deeper understanding of residential school trauma.
  • Connections with local health staff and providers.
  • The opportunity for on-going learning and relationship-building between participants and Indigenous communities.

In these sessions, themes of colonial genocide, systematic separation from Indigenous identity, land and culture and the resulting mental and physical health disparities, will be discussed. These themes may surface personal stories and participants are encouraged to prepare to hear this difficult journey.

Please note that sessionals will be covered by the JCCs. Per the JCC Honoraria & Sessional Reimbursement Guidelines mileage of fewer than 50kms one way will not be reimbursed and we will be unable to reimburse for flights and/or accommodations.
